"Between 75 and 80% of marine pollution is caused by land, particularly agriculture. 30% of this is from the atmosphere. Around 12% of the pollution is caused by maritime transport. In South America, 98% of domestic wastewater ends up, untreated, in the sea. The countries along the Mediterranean Sea throw 50 million tons of waste into it every year and the Chinese throw 60 million tons of waste into the Yellow sea daily. Over half of the hydrocarbon discharge comes from continents, 5% comes from oil tanker accidents, 20% comes from waste and other ship-related accidents, 4% from sea exploitation and 11 to 15% is due to natural causes. Accidental pollution through hydrocarbon is significantly decreasing and only represents a small percentage of waste through degassing estimated at between 1.5 and 3 million tons of oil a year. In 2003, according to the WWF, between 0.7 and 1.3 million tons of oil were spread by degassing in the Mediterranean. According to the Ifremer (the French Institute for Exploitation of the Sea), coastal water pollution cost the world economy almost 12.8 billion dollars in 2006."

As i said on the previous blog, i worked a lot lately.
You are probably surprised by my last drawings, as it's totally different from what i did before.
Not that i'll totally forget "Berangere", but i took a lot of pleasure to work on new different things, and to come back to the basics.
I want to do more realistic portraits, more human figures. It's something i really like to do, and i'm sure i have to keep that way.
I train myself to be better at proportion, at perspective, as i learned it at school.
I have tons of ideas for the next paintings, i just can't wait to do them!

"Berenice", my piece for the London Miles 'Literal Eyes' show, inspired by the novel "Berenice" from Edgar Allan Poe.

I discovered Edgar Allan Poe at the age of 13, thanks to my French teacher.
I immediately felt in love with "the extraordinary tales". I loved everything about it, the feelings, the dark and neurotic mood...
Poe is a great artist, by far my favorite writer, I have read all of his books and never get bored.
Thanks to him i get interested by the "Romantic" movement in America and Europe, and I discovered by the way great writers and artists like Baudelaire, Victor Hugo ...
Poe was, i think, a revelation, he helped me to devellop my current style. He is one of my everyday life's inspiration. He gave me a taste for the darkness, the unreal, the morbid and the sublime...

If I chose to recreate "Berenice" for this exhibition, it is first because this novel is one of the first i had the chance to read, and then it is, in my opinion, one of the strongest novel Poe ever Wrote!
Poe express through this strory a lot of feelings, he speaks in his own way of madness, love, life and death, old age, sickness. It is dark, beautiful, terrible, and full of symbolism.
The main subject of this novel is the tooth: Teeth are fascinating, they evoke so much in our everyday life, in the history and religion. Teeth are a symbol of life, of good health, of beauty.
If you lose your teeth, as it is said in the novel, it is then a symbol of death, old age, loss of innocence, sickness, loss of feminity, fear.
Working on such an interesting and symbolic subject was more than great for me, it couldn't be more perfect for my morbid and psychotic style.

As you know, Berangere loves cooking, especially pies. She makes amazing pies since 2007. Why 2007? Well, Berangere was born from my imagination in 2007... I was searching for a girl like her for years when i finally found her, so i can say it was an important year for us... I'm always so happy to see Berangere grow, i think she'll be an amazing girl later...

As you maybe know, Berangere likes animals a lot... So together one day, we decided to make a poster for them. The question was: 'Can you imagine life without them?' Cause no, i can't image my life without animals... i have 2 rabbits, it's just the cuttest thing in the entire world. when i look at them, i forget everything... I think you have to learn a lot from animals, they are maybe more human than us.

Berangere has a lots of animals friends, like octopus, birds, cat, chicken... it's simply awesome how they like her, it's a real love story between berangere and them!! She can't live without them, for sure. When she was a child, berangere hadn't got lots of friends, so she decided to live in her proper world, a world where her friends were animals. And she was happy, for sure... Today it's still the same, Berangere is living in a big house with all of them, even if she's now trying to find the man of her dream.... (but this part of the story is for later folks)

Well, i should begin by introduce you Berangere... I'll not speak a lot about her now, i'll keep her amazing story for later, but i know you're curious, and you probably want to meet her...
You know she's a cute girl, you'll maybe fall in love with her!!
But well, no more words, and welcome to Berangere!! Tadaaaaaam...
(oh, i should probably tell you i'll begin by my older works, now berangere is not a teenager anymore you know, she's a women. but this part of the story is for later folks, sorry...)

In a few words...

Virginie Bastin, aka Miss Sucette, was born in Belgium.
She began to draw when she was a cutle lil girl.
She was often alone, so, naturaly, she spent all of her time drawing, and she never let it go.
She grew up surrounded by old horror movies (the kind of movies where the car always broke down in the middle of nowhere...) and old cartoons. As a result, she began to create her own world, her own stories.
With an imagination overflowing, painting was just a result for her, a manner to exorcize her childhood fears.

After receiving her degree in Graphic Design from Sain-Luc Liege in 2006, Miss Sucette quickly felt disgusted by this job. She felt trapped in a lifestyle she hated, and could not give a chance to her creativety as she wanted.
So, as an evidence, she returned to her first love, the painting...

Quickly the nickname Miss Sucette came naturaly to her. Sucette was the nickname given to her in highscholl, and the idea of using it for her work as a paintress was really important for her, probably because of a sentimental attachment, and then Miss Sucette is a nickname that has a double meaning. When you heard it, you first think about the sweetness, childhood, happiness, but behind that sweet and enchanting name lies the cruelty of life, the reality, death and suffering. This paradox between the sweetness and bitterness, she likes to use it in her paintings.

The majority of her work is oil painting, but she often use charcoal and graphite as well.
Animals, nature, science, and symbolism are a central theme for her works.
Trough her paintings, she contemplates life, death, evolution, technology, loss of innocence, cruelty, wars...
The messages she deliver are often tragic, what's the point to show only what is good in the world? You have to think about what's wrong with us, what's wrong in the world we live in.
